Another week and another new country. Just a short one you will be glad to know. I wanted to get an entry from Uruguay, the Switzerland (apparently) of South America, before I leave tonight. Â
My last journal entry came from Buenos Aires, which was also the last place we were in. We spent 6 nights there altogether because it was a great place and we were staying at one of favourite hostels. The remaining few nights there were spent eating more steak, drinking more coffee and we had one more night out there. My cholesterol levels have definately taken a battering, especially as I worked out that I had eaten steak every day I was there. Buenos Aires is often refered to as a the "Paris of South America" and it certainly felt that way compated to other places we have stayed.
We left Buenos three nights ago for a boat across the atlantic to Uruguay. I must mention the taxi driver who was a right character. He claimed to be an ex soccer hooligan, banned from attending any games, but was a changed man now. The boat journey was followed by a 2 hour coach journey to the capital city, Montevideo.
The hostel that we are staying in is a downgraded version of the last one. It still has the same facilities of free internet, free breakfast, Tv room and so forth. However, they arent as well functionning as in the last place. For example, the windows in our room dont close and the toilet doors are broken. However, its a lot better than in most places we have stayed in South America.
So whats happened since we have been here. Not a lot. Its been a bit of a money save after Buenos Aires. We did, however, visit their national football stadium, the Centenario Stadium. This is the very stadium where the first World Cup was won by the hosts themselves.....Uruguay. We saw the World Cup that they won and even got to walk on to the pitch, which felt a bit bizarre. A stadium enriched with history and definately worth a visit.
So tonight we are off to our final country of the trip, BRAZIL. Another overnight killer of a bus journey coming up. We are staying with one of Tom's old University mates in Puerto Alegre and then off to his hometown to experience the Brazilian lifestyle with his family. Should be an interesting week. Ill let you knwo how we get on.
