Hello all!
Another update on the life of a Honiara Princess! (Thanks Tom!). Have just stepped out of another thunderstorm (3rd one i've been caught in since getting here!). Not sure how i'm managing it to be honest... I hate the rain as it brings cockroaches and spiders to Kiwi House ugh....
Things have been good here but much quieter since the departure of the mad Irish men! Quite a welcomed break however!
Spent last weekend on a beautiful Island in the Central Province called Maravaggi (See photos). It really is paradise on Earth. We started Saturday early (8:30 a.m.) and headed down to the Yacht Club to get what I thought would be a speedboat or Yacht even, for the 1.5hr journey over the choppy waters. But instead, the 6 of us were presented with a fibreglass blue boat called 'The Saratoga'! If I explain what Saratoga is: if you imagine a drink consisting of the cheapest Tesco Value Whisky and mixed with the sweetest Tesco Value cola, you're about 50% there to conceptualising the mingingness of this drink! Needless to say I was a little apprehensive about the journey... What ensued was the most rocky ride ever! Hollyhead to Dublin crossing eat your heart out! It was SO scary! I also think I might be about 2cm shorter having had my spine compressed so violently with every wave we went over! Oh well, it was worth it in the end. Absolutely nothing there apart from white sandy beaches and a small resort with beach huts. We spend the rest of the day snorkelling - not too deep for me - I mean, has anyone SEEN The Blue Planet??? Shark's can swim in shallow waters AND come out of the coral reefs you know! So I dipped in and out between sunbathing. Then came the ever-certain shower of the day and we ended up in the bar until dinner in the evening! It was so nice to be on an almost-desert island and get away from the dusty, dirty Honiara city.
And it was back to reality the next day with storms and sunshine and storms again back in Honiara. Whole trip with food, transport and accommodation cost about 40GBP. Awesome! Obstetrics and Gynae department has been busy this week with lots of exciting labours. Post-partum haemorrhages, placentas in weird places, etc.... Unfortuantely i'm just trying to hang around for some 'ordinary ones' so that I can get some experience delivering. Most of the ones i've tried to do this week have turned into caesareans - which I can only watch as the consultants do them all. Never mind...am off to try and catch a few babies now, so fingers crossed i'll be lucky this afternoon/evening!
There's still a busy turn around of students at Kiwi House. Most of them do 'turn around' and walk out! (boom boom!), but apparently some girls from London arrived yesterday and have had to move elsewhere as we're full at the moment. It'll be nice to have some female hormones around though! Working all day with men and going home to a house of smelly boys is getting a little tiresome! (The Tasmanians i'm living with at the moment are not the most hygienic...). If I have to listen to one more conversation about the new PS3 i'll go mad!!!
Best dash, have 'extended' my lunch break long enough!
Please email if you can or leave me messages...
Lots of Love
Lisexxx
