Last weekend was the first Lunar dull moon of the chinese new year which ment the celebration of the Lantern Festival. As Auckland has a large Chinese population this is well celebrated here and they section off Albert park for the festivities.
Not knowing what to expect we heading along on Saturday with the idea of seeing some small lanterns and eating some street food. What we got was amazing! The designs of the lanterns were incredible, ranging from fruit hanging in the treesto humans potraying a scene. As the sun went down the lanterns realy began to show their true effect with different sights around the park at each turn.
In the centre there was a main stage showing chinese acts, unfortunately it was very busy so we were unable to see any of the acts however we did manage to catch a Karate show elsewhere in the park and watched as some local Karate dojo's showed off their skills by breaking, although not everytime, ceramic tiles using different methods.
Soon we began to get hungry so went to the street dedicated to the food and we were not dissapointed. There were approximately 100 stalls offering cuninary treats from China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and many more - the only difficult thing was what to choose.
We tought we would select a few diffirent stalls to eat from so started with some fresh spring rolls from Vietnam. To follow this we had some hndmade chinese dumplings with hot sauce before having pad thai asour mains. To wash this down we had coconut milk straight out of the coconut itself.
Before leaving we took another look around the park at the lanterns and then had some ice crream - the best way to finish any day off!
