Lamai Beach
It took me 24 hours to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui. And it's only about 650km. But it all started with the train being three hours late. This consequently made me miss the morning ferry. Warning to all: joint train+bus+ferry tickets bind the holder to a certain ferry that had been prebooked by the company and in case of any delays the holder has to wait for hours till the next, afternoon ferry. My fellow travellers and I missed the one at 10am and had to wait till 4pm. But the worst bit was when we were taken by bus from the train station in town (Surat Thani) to the company's hub, i.e. a couple of huts by the river, away from any civilisation = shops, food etc and told we were to wait there for 2 hours to take another bus to the pier. No-one told us that once we get to the pier we gonna have to wait another 2 hours for the ferry. At both waiting points the only food available - sold by the uber happy staff - were crisps, pot noodles and sandwiches made to order with salad (dodgy), ham (dodgy) and mayo (super dodgy in 35 degrees Celsius). I survived on Coke and crisps.
I was more than pleased when we finally moored at Koh Samui.
Koh Samui was great. The iBed hostel has exceeded my expectations, especially that I got to live a double life and use the beach (and most importantly, deck chairs, towels and parasols) of the super expensive resort across the road. Almost legally:). The weather wasn't great, not much of a blue sky except for day one, and a torrential rain followed by a power cut across town. Still it was fantastic. I met loads of fun people and spent numerous nights drinking Chang on the terrace and chatting till 5am! I was sad to leave.
Lamai beach, I may be back one day:)
