After waving goodbye to Liv and Chris, we went in search of a bus stop. Next stop Krabi. We were told they came by every hour and were on the corner. After some time wandering up and down the road with our heavy back packs on, a small converted pick up truck beeped its horn at us. This was the bus we had been looking for!
It was literally a pick up truck with seats and a roof on the back. The man took our bags and plonked them on the roof rack... I was a bit concerned as he didn't secure them down, and when I asked all he said was 'yes krabi town', the next 30 minutes I stared out the side and back of the truck half expecting to have to get the driver to stop so I could collect our bags from the road side! Initially he took it slow, but as soon as he was on a windy long stretch of road he threw the truck around the corners. All 8 of us in the back felt like we had been on a roller coaster! Oh well, at least it was only a pound each.
Luckily our bags made it to krabi, and after acquiring a map we searched for our hostel. We foolishly did not study the map closely as if we had we would have noticed our hostel was a road away. Instead we headed off in completely the wrong direction, searching the streets yet again with our heavy bags on! Nevertheless we eventually found it.
Our hostel, 'Pak Up Hostel', is incredible, even though we are in a shared dorm the bunks are pretty comfy and there's aircon. As for the hostel itself it has two new outdoor areas, a rooftop bar and a 'playground' (bar, pool table live music) on the ground floor. Bathrooms are new and nice also, although you have to get up early if you want a hot shower. As hostels go, it's probably up there with the best... and all for just 180 baht (£3.60) each per night!
Krabi itself is a lovely town on the river's edge. The scenery is picturesque and the shops in the town are different and less touristy than those in the other two places we've visited.
We were looking forward to visiting the night market but didn't realise that there were two: the food one, on everyday selling fruit, veg and hot and cold food. And a nik nak one, which is only on from Friday til Sunday. Unfortunately we were Krabi on a Tuesday so could only go to the food one. Matt ate some very dodgy tasting meat which we couldn't really identify.
The town itself is worth visiting but not for more than a couple of nights. Although an interesting place, there isn't an awful lot to do although you can use it as a base to explore the surrounding areas by longtail boat.
Stuck for something to do on the first evening, we decided to go find the nearest geocache. The website told us it was only a few hundred metres away and gave a simple set of instructions to find it. Sure enough there it was behind a water meter. Not exactly as beautiful a spot as the other we found in Ao Nang but they all count.
We're off to Koh Lanta this morning by ferry (by the way, if you hadn't figured it out by yourself by now Koh means island in Thai). We've heard nice things about Lanta so we're looking forward to it!
