Ok, so we have been absolutely rubbish on here. Computers in Thailand and Laos aren't amazing and to be honest we have had such an action packed few weeks we have only had time to email our Mummy's!!!
So after Bangkok we headed to Chang Mai and signed up for our 3 day trek!! We had so much fun, it was a bit hard work trekking through the jungle in the heat but we only did about 6 hours walking in total! Sarah seemed to have bars of soap attached to her feet and did slip and land on her bum a fair few times!! So she came away with a pretty bruised coxics (not sure how to spell that but im sure you know what we are on about). We also had a trek on elephants which was seriously cool!! We sat in baskets for some of the trek but got to sit behind their ears for a good percentage of it!! Day three saw us rafting along the river on a bamboo raft.... our raft was pretty dodgy and we had to have some bamboo added to it to stop us sinking! Not that it helped much. 5 minutes into our rafting, sarahs pole got stuck under a rock and bounced off of Kims head... so kim was rather dizzy and sick for a few hours! Those poles are a lot heavier than they look!! We all managed to avoid getting any leaches on us though and the times in the villages were truly memorable!! Playing drinking games on the second night was hilarious, although the sangsum thai whisky wasnt too pleasant!
We stuck in chang mai for a few more days travelling with a couple we had met on the trek called Ross and Laura, and another guy called jason. We decided to hire out mopeds again! Which were so so cool. We visited a temple with a view of the whole of chang mai which was pretty impressive and al got blessed my a buddhist monk! Which was very cool! Bought a few souvineers then headed onto some hot springs, however getting there wasnt quite the short journey we were expecting so didnt have long untill we had to head back!!
Monday saw us waving off sean. Sarah was sad but as we only had a few weeks left it wasnt too bad!! We than decided spur of the moment to come to laos.... so on tuesday us two ross and laura started our 3 DAY journey to luand prabang! It was a nightmare, the first day involved 6 hours in a mini bus. We then crossed the border on day two and had 7 HOURS on a rickety wooden boat, as you can imagine after 7 hours on a wooden bench we were all a tad cranky. On day three we had 9 hours on the same boat! Which was just awful, and we had to sit on the floor for half of the journey as there was no seats!! To top of our journey at the front of our boat on the second day, was a man very ill after being in a motorbike accident. really shook us all up as the only way the could help a dying man was to put him on a 9 hour ferry. Not even on a stretcher!!
Finally arrived in luang prabang and crashed out. The next day we hired bikes and attempted to bike to a waterfall but ross' bike broke!! So gave up. Glad we did too as it was a 25km journey!! So the next day we took a tuc tuc instead. Had an excellent time leaping off of rope swings into the waterfall pools!!
Next stop was Phonsavan. The bus here was hilarious. A 6 hour local bus, with no leg room, should have been an awful experience. But if we told you that to get to the toilet (in a bush) we had to climb over chickens (live) to get off the bus!! They just had live chickens wandering about... it was mental!! In Phonsavan we discovered lots and lots about the hisory of laos and a scerte war that happened there during the war which was so awful. America dropped over 9 million cluster bombs. alot of which are still around today, unexploded waiting for a small child to think its a ball.... It upset us a lot to think of what the americans did to such a beautiful innocent country but it was a great experience to learn it all. We visited the plain of jars too which were very cool! If a little creepy.
Vang Vieng was very much a backpacker town but we loved it!! We went tubing which basically involved floating along a river, in the inner tube of a tractor, stopping at bars and leaping off of platforms(with the help of a swing) into the river below!! We did it with a great group of people so it was lots of fun!!
Left ross and laura and headed here to vietiene. We dont really like it much so are killing time until we get our bus to bangkok! Then its off to hong kong on monday. It's going so quickly! We hope that there will be plenty to occupy us in hong kong. And hopefully it will be sunny so we can go to some beaches and top up our tans!! Theyhave been rather lost since we left the incredable weather in australia!
hope everyone is well!!! and not too bored after reading this massive journal entry!!
love from kim and sarah
