Hi
We left Taupo and headed south to Wellington via the Kapiti coast for a couple of days.
During our stay in the Kapiti coast we went for a walk or two and took it easy, there
really wasn't much to do there. The weather was lovely but the wind really picked up in the
evenings.
We then headed further south to the capital, Wellington.
We parked the camper in a multistorey car park with a minimum height of 1.8 meters, not
knowing the height of the camper we thought..go for it!! luckily enough we guessed right
but it was so close, we were waiting for the sound of camper roof to scrape along the
car park and we even opened the sun roof to see how close we were.
We walked around Wellington on a busy saturday afternoon, just browsing past shops. We
then, both had pancakes with fresh fruit in a small cafe and they were soo nice!! After
our pancakes we went into Te Papa, which is a museum of NZ. Its an inspiring, interactive
look at NZ's history and culture. Its a really cool, modern museum with 5 0r 6 floors
with different exhibitions on each floor. we really enjoyed the natural disaster exhibition,
and especially the earthquake house that gave you a feeling of what it was like in earthquake that hit NZ in the 1970's.
The next day was windy!!! And we decided it to head to the top of Wellington on a cable car. At the top we were nearly blown away by the wind, but managed to take some pretty good photos of Wellington waterfront and harbour. Later that day we met up with Chris and Jiana, who are good friends of Andrew and Jo, Phils cousin and fiance. They took us for a tour of the wellington area, showing us the many bays, the boat from the King Kong film and Peter Jacksons house, (director of Lord of the Rings, King Kong & The Lovely Bones)
as well as many other areas around Wellington. Chris invited us for dinner that night with
his family, we were given an amazing welcome by Dave, Jenny, younger brother Andy and family friend Jenny. For dinner we had lamb and chicken, it was the best meal we have had in a long time!! And dessert we had a real NZ treat, Hokey Pokey ice cream!! Its definately up there with Joe's ice cream, if not better. Dave and Jenny kindly put us up for the night, which we really appreciated. Waking up in a bed for the first time in 2 and a half weeks, Chris' brother Andy cooked bacon and egg for breakfast. It was a beautiful day and the views from the house are amazing, Andy took us on a tour of Wellington, stopping off for a milkshake in Days bay before going to the top of mount Victoria, where you can get an amazing view of the whole of the city and the surrounding bays. We had just enough time to stop off for an ice cream and a bottle of L&P, another Kiwi favourite, before getting our ferry to the South Island.
We would really like to thank the Benham family again for their kind generosity and introducing us to Hokey Pokey ice cream, L&P and Pineapple Lumps.
