After the Backpacker's mecca that is the East Coast, we took a short flight to Australia's Northern most city, the tropical Darwin. Although we had spent the last 7 months in very good weather you really don't get used to the extreme heat and humidity of the Tropical North. This was supposedly the end of the Summer Wet-Season and begining of the cooler winter months. However, its pretty hard to notice when the temp exceeds 35 degree every day!
After caning our budget over the previous weeks we decided to forego the usual excursions and just relax for a few days. Although I did manage to coerce Sofia into coming fishing with me for half a day! As you will notice from the photos that accompany this blog...we werent too successful. Although in my defence neither were the other 6 people on the boat.
After five nights it was great to feel that our Aussie adventure was entering its final phase and we would be off to Asia in 4 days. All that was left was our trip to the Red Centre via the Gahn train.
24hours and 1500km's directly South we hit the town closet to every beach in Australia!! I can assure you that there is really only one reason to be in Alice Springs, its the jumping off point to visit Uluru (Ayer's Rock).
I'm sure you can understand that after already driving well over 4000Km's in Oz I was simply thrilled to be picking up another hire car for the short drive (450Km) to the resort town of Yulara and the Uluru-Kaja Tjuta National park. But it was certainly worth it.
I'm not sure what was more strange, the sight of this huge red monolith sticking up out of the extremely flat and barren terrain or watching 100 Japanese tourists seated on foldable plastic chairs, cameras at the ready to watch the sunrise at 6am.
Needless to say we do have a couple of photos ourselves. Every angle, light condition, morning, noon and night!
See you in Asia.....Phil and Sofia
