Fact #1: Arin has had at least two scoops of gelato each day since we got to Italy.
Fact #2: Arin has also ordered 4 pizzas so far.
Fact #3: Peter wished he ordered pizza for lunch today, but instead blindly ordered something he thought sounded good, which turned out to be sauceless spaghetti mixed with about 30 clams. It wasn't good.
Fact #4: Mercedes > Fiat Panda
Today was another long but fun-filled day in Italy. After a delicious breakfast at the hotel, we had a nice surprise when the Hertz cashier handed us the keys to a silver Mercedes because there were no more Fiat Pandas available. Even better, our Garmin started working just in time to navigate us out of Rome. Italians don't believe in driving lanes, crosswalks, turn signals, or really any other rules of the road, so even with the GPS, getting to the highway was quite an adventure.
Out in the open country, we took a series of winding, narrow roads to Saturnia. After lunch (delicious for Arin, not so much for Peter), we changed into our swimsuits and headed to the Thermal Baths outside of town. The baths are a multi-tiered series of pools fed from a hot spring waterfall. They smelled a little funky (sulfur - blegh), but were very pleasant to lounge in.
Feeling refreshed and smelling like rotten eggs, we headed to the car to drive to Siena. The road to Siena wound through countless vineyards and olive groves, and dozens of small villages. Of course we stopped for pictures and gelato along the way.
In Siena, we walked through steep, narrow, cobblestone streets to get to Pizza del Campo. The piazza is a huge open space surrounded by restaurants, shops, and sidewalk cafes. We did some people watching and wandered up a side street to the Duomo, a massive marble cathedral originally constructed in the 12th century. After site-seeing we ate dinner at a crowded sidewalk cafe bordering Piazza del Campo. Peter did a much better job ordering this time. It helped that the menu was in English.
We are just getting to our hotel now, and are looking forward to wrapping up our enjoyable day with a complementary plate of cheese and a bottle of red wine.
