Pete and Lou's Big Adventure
Hi Guys - Well we survived the first of our treks. Actually it wasnt too bad, not as bad as we were expecting. The first leg from Cairns to Townsville took us 6 hrs and went quite quick. Other than that there isnt much too tell. In townsville we waited a couple of hrs for our overnight connection to Mt Isa. The bus for this trip was thankfully quiet and we could spread out and get some sleep. On our way through the nothingness of the outback we watched the stars out of the window - so clear it was amazing. I tryed to find the Sothern Cross but failed.
We arrived at 7am in Mt Isa abit bleary eyed but not too tired. Saying that i went straight to sleep as soon as my head hit the pillow - pete needes his beauty sleep. That afternoon we decided to do a mine tour. Exciting i hear you all say - well it actually was. After getting fitted out with all the ultra sexy orange overalls we down to the elevator to decent into the black. Down in the mine our quide showed all the equipment they use etc. It is quite unbelieveable the conditions thesew guys work in. The guide told us the the mine blow the charges every night at 8. At precisely that time that night - the earth moved and not in a good way. Seriously it was like nothing ive felt before - the buildings shook.
After dinner we went for a walk to the town lookout for a view over the town and the enormous mine. Wow. This place is massive but stangly the mine doesnt spoil the view. I guess because that is the reason the own is there in the first place so it seems natural. Then came the bit i was looking forward to the most - a goodnights sleep. lol x
The next evening we borded the bus to Katherine - stopping in Tennant Creek at midnight for about 2 hrs. Apart from the massies of bugs (bite central) and the drunk aggressive aboriginal people - all was ok and it was back on the bus to Katherine.
