We've had a few days in Hull with Richard and Sarah, visiting the Red Gallery where Sarah's exhibition from her time on the Isle of Harris was being shown. Many encouraging and delightful comments in the Visitors Book and a large and enthusiastic spread in the Hull Daily Mail.
Left on the 26th for Chesterfield but hadn't got far before another breakdown. This time, near total loss of power and clouds of smoke. A passing farmer stopped and diagnosed the fault as the hose having come adrift from the air filter. Replaced, he left and we tried to, spluttering to a halt a few minutes later. I replaced the hose again and we limped to a garage near South Cave. There I bought and put on the proper clip for the hose and off we set. Halfway though S. Cave we lost all power again and enveloped the village in smoke. After a few minutes halt we managed to start once more, turned round and crawled back to the garage. Unable to help us as we were too high for their workshop they called a low-loader for us who, for £70, agreed to take us the 12 miles to JCT600 in Hull. Getting down from the cab at JCT I gave myself a quite deep 2 inch gash on my forearm from the sharp corner of a hinge. Leaving D to pay our delivery charge I went to reception, got a temporary bandaging and a ride with D to Hull A&E. There I was amazingly quickly seen and butterflied together. Unable to sleep in the compound because of insurance concerns we spent the night at the curbside and next day in Hull where we had a guided and very interesting tour of the 1960s side trawler the Arctic Corsair.
By 5.00pm we were back to collect our repaired van. Amazing what can be fixed for £460. In this case an EGR filter - or something like that. Anyway, whatever they did cured the problem and we got to Chesterfield eventually.
