Sunday - An early start today to catch the 'Sea to Sky' train, run by Rocky Mountaineer. We were in the two-storey dome coach with wide windows and glass roof. The staff are relentlessly cheerful and very efficient, food and drink plentiful and the scenery fantastic. The first half of the three and a half hour journey runs along the coast with islands and mountains in the background. Then from Squamish we turn inland and upwards, through the Cheakamus Canyon - a deep gorge with a fast flowing river and roaring waterfalls, very full after recent heavy rain and melting snow. So we wind our way north to Whistler by locomotive. Primarily a ski resort, this is a very attractive village, its centre pedestrianised and many walking and cycling trails around. We follow one of these, the Meadow Park Trail, singing all the while to keep bears away!
Monday - Heavy rain overnight and a misty cloudy morning. Seek out some galleries to look at some artwork and we leave it late before deciding to go up the gondola to the Peak 2 Peak cable car - the longest single-span cablecar in the world. We're up in the late snowfields and as we cross to Blackcomb Peak a long, long way down to the valley bottom. Some of the time it's clear and the panorama amazing. Then the clouds return and we are lost in the mist - very atmospheric! Then it's back to the train for another lovely trip back down to Vancouver - made lively by all the free beer and wine! A really good trip - loved Whistler, even though it was very expensive, and the train trip was brilliant. Now we're in an airport hotel, heading up to Alaska in the morning.
