We arrived in Harar yesterday afternoon - flying from Addis to Dire Dawa, where our driver picked us up at the airport. We were a few hours late in leaving Addis, and our driver was pushing it a bit to try and make the 90 min drive to Harar before dark. Our hotel here is something else. We landed in Addis this morning at 6AM, slightly ahead of schedule after an uneventful flight. Addis is at an elevation of 2400m, so it is a bit chillier here than we probably expected. It's the end of the rainy season as well, so it was an average sort of day. Suprisingly, even though the plane was full, very few of the people actually got off at Addis. We were standing at the baggage collection with 4 other couples from Australia - all of them here to do volu...
Finally .. we are off, and with a minimum of fuss. The check-in at Sydney Airport was uneventful - even a bit amusing. A bit of street theatre was provided by two young Middle-Eastern girls who seemed to be having a problem with the weight of their multiple carry-on bags. After 20-odd minutes of "negotiation", there was a lot of sighing, and a lot of outstretched arms with palms up, but all to no avail. Finally there was a lot of zipping and ripping-out and slapp...
The Ethiopia trip is a goer. We have the flight bookings locked in, the tour dates set, and yesterday the visas arrived. We fly out in 13 days time - on Friday the 13th - at 1PM, on a 13 hour flight to Bangkok, en route to Addis Ababa - by Ethiopian Airways. I have nothing but good feelings about this trip.
