And so it begins... another long journey. It seems rather strange that I began my day with a trip to the Shepard Landfill in Calgary - the dump - to drop off the renovation junk from my bathroom renovation and now here I am, 12 hours later, sitting in a hallway at Sanfranciso International typing this, on the cusp of a new 3 month adventure.
A trip to the dump and international travel all in one day. It doesn't get much better than that.
Anyhow, for this trip I have some new technology. I've replaced my old Palm Pilot organizer and folding keyboard. It certainly looked pretty "cool," but in reality was somewhat of a nightmare when trying to transfer stuff from it to the internet. I had to crawl under more than a few dirty tables in India and the Middle East struggling to connect its cables into the backs of dust-clogged computers in the internet cafes.
I've replaced it with a small netbook laptop, the incredible advantages of I'm seeing even this soon into the trip. I mean, SFO airport doesn't have free internet. At least for most people. I'm getting it for free though. I walked down a long, quiet hallway to the entrance of the Singapore Airlines executive lounge where I was going to try and get my boarding pass for my onward flight. It was closed, but I wondered if they had a wireless internet connection for clientelle. If so, I wondered if the signal was strong enough to make it through the wall and into the quiet, carpeted hallway where I was standing with my nose pressed up against the glass door.
I pulled out my netbook and booted it up, then turned on the WiFi and told it to search for a connection.
Bingo.
I was on the internet.
So, I'm now sitting on the carpet in the hallway outside the lounge tying this up and tranferring it directly to the internet. This is a long way from what I've been able to do on other trips!
In, fact to try out what is possible, I even took a photo using my digital camera, with the idea of connecting it up to the netbook and uploading the photo right to this blog as well. But the camera cable is in my luggage! Oops! I have to get used to all of this new power. I'll upload later. Right now it's time to move. I'm getting a sore butt sitting here.
I guess the technology can't solve everything.
