Up nice & early this morning to avoid the mid morning bird brigade, we caught a train from Trier to Luxembourg City for a couple of nights. Got the bus from the train station to the campsite. We had been waiting on the wrong side of the road until realising our mistake & so arrived at the campsite at 12:10pm only to find that the campsite staff enjoy a siesta from 12pm - 2pm. So we had nearly a 2 hour wait, but got chatting to a korean girl for most of it which passed the time quite nicely. Also got to eat our sarnies, which weren't squashed for a change, as I'd come up with a brilliant plan to attach our lunch bag to the outside of my backpack! Hooray!
The campsite was dirt cheap at 12 euros per night, and had some of the nicest facilities too! We even had our own picnic bench by our pitch which was awesome as we didn't have to sit on the floor then! A little disappointing was the very rude man in reception. We asked for the nearest supermarket & were told it was an 8km walk & no bus service. He quite abruptly reminded us that they had a small supermarket on site. Using our clever noses we sniffed out a shop about 1 km away, that was probably more expensive than the bigger supermarket, but certainly cheaper than the rude man's shop!
We spent a day lazing around the campsite & enjoying the sunshine, which quickly turned into liquid sunshine later in the day & so we sat in the common room for most of the afternoon/evening. The next day we got a lift into town with our Korean friend, which saved us a bus fare.
We had a look around the old town & enjoyed walking along the Chemin de la Corniche - biggest balcony in the world. Pete went down the bottom to take a picture of me at the top & it was then we realised just how long it took to get down & then to come back up all those stairs again! We had a look inside the Cathedral Notre Dame which has a famous statue called "the Lady Comforter of the Afflicted". The Palace of the Dukes was beautiful, but was closed so could only see from the outside, wondered past the statue of the Grand Duchess & the Duke on his horse. We had some free entertainment - one of the videos on the website - and walked past the poshest MacDonalds restaurant I've ever seen! The viaduct was very impressive too. Luxembourg is the 3rd smallest country in Europe & apparently has everything you could imagine in a land of counts & dynasties, except for the fire breathing dragons. We didn't hang around long enough to prove it otherwise.
After another night of heavy rain we woke up to clear skies & thought....Hooray! But was not for long. The clouds were looming & soon over us again with their threatening might. Despite this, the weather did hold for most of the day & wasn't til the evening again that the rain once more came. Took a trip out the during the day to find Eurolines bus office, but discovered that it had closed some time ago. You can get a bus into Luxembourg, but can't get one out anymore. Great! That's another cross against them. Instead we got a train back to Koblenz in Germany.
