High light of trip. The sleeper train was brill. There were 3 bunks each side I had the top one.I slept most of the way. Tonight we had our sight of the Ganges. Arrived at the river at sunset. What a sight that was. We took a boat down the river to watch the religious rituals.
Early start today to see the sunrise over the Ganges. The sight that greeted us was amazing. Pilgrims cleansing themselves in the holy river. Some just pouring water over them, others right in the water. Just along from there bodies being cremated. The whole place is a wash with colourfull sari. As we make our way along the river we pass women doing there washing. Its an amazing experience and one i will never forget.
Hard day coming up but littel did we know how hard. We have a terrfying 5 hour drive along a road that sometimes felt like we were off road. There are no rules on the road here. At one time we had 2 trucks coming at us, some how we squeezed beteen them. We arrived at Bhairawa which is the boarder town. Its about 35 deg no shade flys everywhere. Beggers following you, people trying to get you to buy from them. All in all its a pig of a place.Thank god Nepal is only 30 ft away. That 30 ft took 5 hours to cross. We did not know that the boarder was closed. There must have been about 80people waiting some had been there since the early morning. So there we are nowhere to sit so its backpacks on the dirty road to be used as seats. I wish you could have seen us. As the time went on and the sun went down the mozzies came out.
Someone in the next town to what we are going to in Nepal has shot the leader of the local political party. Thats why we could not cross. At about 7.30pm the Indian side said they would open the boarder for 2 hours. So now we all have to fill in forms get them stamped, get passports stamped. Then we were told the goverment in Nepal had put a curfew in place and would guarantee our safety. By now we have had it and we all go over together to fill in more forms, more stamps in passports, then the electricity was cut. Eventualty we were rounded up and put into lorries and escorted to hotels. What an adventure that was . Littel did we know it was not over yet.
