Well, it's farewell to New Zealand, & 'Aloha' to Hawaii. Heaven knows how we managed to get there - when we tried to check in online we were instructed to ' go to book in desk' which was impossible as there aren't any in Auckland airport, everything is automated! Fortunately we found a helpful staff member who told us that the problem was that we had new passports! (We'd had to renew our passports because we had only 6 months left before they expired) We eventually got our boarding passes & went to check in our cases, only to be told that one of them (mine, of course!) was overweight! How, I wondered, could cases increase in weight when nothing has been added to them & they had been accepted by previous airlines which have the same baggage allowance?!?!? Oh well, after a bit of reorganising they were both the correct weight & all we had to do was wait to board. Fortunately everything was on time & we had an excellent flight to Honolulu. However, it took almost three hours to get out of the airport! The airport is the pits & we couldn't even find a place to get a coffee. Eventually we got to Waikiki & left our luggage in the hotel (it was too early to check in) & went off to explore Waikiki & find that much needed coffee! We soon found the beach - what a gorgeous sight! The water was deep blue & the sand sparkling white, with Diamond Head (an extinct volcano) in the background. We thought we'd simply have to go there! Meanwhile we had to check into what, from the outside, appeared to be a rather dismal hotel (well, it was cheap!) Fortunately appearances were deceptive & although it didn't compare well with the places we stayed in NZ, it was clean & the bed was very comfortable! By this time we were hungry so went out in search of food. The Cheesecake Factory seemed like a good place to eat - it certainly was!! A lovely meal, then, knackered, we went back to our bed!
