Hi Everyone
Well, we have made it to Tulum and I think we all agree that it is pretty nice to get out of the hustle and bustle of Playa del Carmen and Cancun. Not that Playa did not have its exciting moments - it was our first taste of Mexico´s beaches and we could barely believe what we even doing was real as we sat in a bar at happy hour drinking free corona´s in the sunshine to a live band just looking at the sea which is literally turquoise and the sand which does not even look real. Unfortunately not long after this our illusions were shattered a bit as the clouds rolled in. Chris lost out by not standing by his bet to a waiter that it would rain (in fairness the waiter was scarily certain that it wouldn´t...) but rain it most certainly did. Then the street was empty of everyone except brits in oversized brightly coloured macs (none a touch on mine for style... unfortunately I didnt have mine on me to show them) and a lot of very very wet brits inbetween. The rain just kept on coming. Of course the streets here have no drains so pretty soon the roads were just flowing with water. We were forced to take refuse in another bar at happy hour but this one won because they did free nachos and had men dancing around with sombreros.
Our room in Playa was also something to never forget. Im not quite sure (looking now from an absolute luxury 4 bed private room in Tulum) why we agreed to stay there, but it was good comedy. The room had no windows at all and barely had a door - but the parents will be pleased to know that someone had kindly knocked a hole in the concrete ceiling to vent it for us and popped a flowerpot on top for discretion.
Anyway it goes without saying that we weren´t too distraught to leave this morning and Tulum has far exceeded our expectations. The hostel is lovely and and mainly wins because it has free pink bicycles with no brakes but handily with luggage baskets. We spent the day on a gorgeous beach down the coast from Tulum ruins (obviously doing the ruins first) on a beach called Playa Maya which was so gorgeous it was beyond gorgeous and I dont think I have ever seen something quite as spectcaular as the Caribbean sea! We went on a boat trip for a couple of hours organised for us by a man we like to call Pedro who first gave us a ridiculous bargain on a tickets for the ruins and the boat trip and then - when he realised they had run out of actual tickets - paid us the money to go and buy some more tickets from the tickets office anyway. We spent a good two hours on our own private snorkel trip over Tulum barrier reef for barely nothing at all.
This evening we popped on the high-vis jackets and biked downtown to some excellent Mexican food and a couple of local beers.
Tomorrow the fun really begins as we attempt to make it into Belize!
Will update with how that adventure goes as soon as possible...
