The multilayered Palace of Knossos
Whether or not it was actually a "palace," it was a cultural and religious center with sacred areas, living areas, store rooms, work rooms, and meeting places. It dates from 1700 B.C. and the Minoan civilization, the oldest in Europe, was unknown until its excavation around the turn of last century.
