After our initial view of Peru via Puno, Arequipa was a sight for sore eyes. An old colonial city based in the Southern highlands of Peru, Arequipa is a truly beautiful city on it´s own, but also a great starting point for the trip to the Colca Canyon, the world´s second deepest canyon, close behind the nearby Cotahuasi canyon.
We spent a day getting to know Arequipa before setting off on a 2day trip to Colca. We intended to spend a bit more time in the city itself upon our return from the canyon.
The 2 day trip would take us to Chivay first where we went for a walk around the local mountains taking in some old Inka ruins which included a traditional burial site where lots of skulls were strewn about. That first evening we were to go to a folklore dance show, which in namesake didn´t sound too interesting. However when we got there it turned out to be a great laugh, especially when one of the women dancers dressed Ben up in traditional gear (see photos).
Then on the second day we visited the Colca Canyon itself from above, where we were able to view it´s true depth and some of it´s local Andean Condor population sailing around the warm currents in the skies above.
On returning to Arequipa we took in a local city tour which took us to all the sites of interest in and around the city. Yet again pretty good fun:)
