15th June 2013 - started early this morning heading into town to see if the tourist info office was open to get info on a couple places I was interested in seeing today... It was closed but found a guy trying to sell me a tour and he should me how to walk to La loberia beach and that is where I sit now... On black volcanic rocks as the salt water breeze hits me and I look out at all there is too take in. To one side of me I have a colony of sea lions just lazy around the beach and playing in the ocean as it breaks onto the small beach inlet. Baby sea lions suckling from there mother just a meter from where I stand. A turtle is slowing making it way onto the shore, centimeters at a time. Crab scurry around and dozens of different types of birds are flying and hovering around... It is amazing... I can't like of enough words and ways to describe this incredible piece of nature...
I am maybe an hour walk from the San cristibal airport to find this place of such undisturbed wonder. There is no one else around. It is hard to try and imagine what early explorers to the region and Darwin must have thought when they came across this place with is incredible unique set of animals and plants unlike anything else. It give me goosebumps jut walking here now and I knew what to expect... But nothing could prepare you for the isolation and strange animals that call this place home. I am looking forward to starting the cruise with a group tomorrow but at the same time been here alone with nothing but nature at it's finest, no sounds but the ocean and occasional sea lion moan, no evidence of man is something beyond magical. I could go forever trying to describe but dont want to sit too long, large centipede just crawled out from the rock I am resting on and have to be very mindful of the large marine iguanas that roam freely between the vegetation behind me and the rock and ocean in front of me...
Back into town to pick up laundry and get some lunch followed by quick rest and then set out again. This time I walked the 30 mins to the other side of the town to the interpretation centre. It was a fantastic building that explained the development of the islands and the history of exploration and settlement in the Galapagos. All signs were in english and Spanish :) then walked out to start the walk up tijeretas hill. This is a sancuarty for the tijeretas birds that makes there homes here. Walked for a couple of hours around and didn't see one bird... Despite numerous signs alluding to that fact that the birds live here and not to disturb them I couldn't even find one. Did see other animals and birds and spent some time in a small inlet watching the sea lions play and swim around in the clear blue waters. Was disappointing not to see the birds but here were many other animals and just fantastic to walk around the island. Didn't want to venture to far from the path as they have a type of poison ivy here and I am not exactly sure what it looks like. After a couple hours I Made my way back into town and then it was time for an afternoon sleep. watched the sun set over harbor and then found some dinner. It was deep fried steak, not exactly what I expecting. Then back to the room for an early night. Got slightly sunburnt combined with all the walking has worn me out.
