27th June 2013 - it is pouring rain today which does give the surrounding mountains a very mistic feel with the low cloud and hazey appearance. After breakfast went in search of an ATM to find some money before heading to quayaquill, am trying to be more organizing instead of just arrived at a place and hoping for the best. This plan didn't come together as all the ATM in the town seemed to be out of order, so once ago will just head off and hope I can find a place to stay and some money once I arrive.
Walked to the bus terminal in Banos and was asking around for a bus to quayaquill. They seemed to indicate that the next one wasn't for another hour and half. Meet up with another aussie couple also traveling to quayaquill and then a guy looked out the window and ran towards a bus that was heading off across the street... So we followed through the rain and the bus stopped and we jumped on as it was starting to move again. The bus was going to Riobamba not quayaquil despite what the driver had said. Not a big deal it is on the way and the conductor of the bus seemed to indicate that he would get us a bus when we arrived. After a couple hours we were at Riobamba and again it was jump off the bus as it slows down to drive past the terminal run through the terminal and jump on a bus that is going all the way to quayaqill. The weather today is keeping the usual hitch hikers and locals looking for a lift at bay so it is fairly quick traveling. The roads are a good quality some of the best I have seen, but the still have to bend there way through the mountains. Due to the low clouds and climbing up high into the mountains we were driving above the clouds which always provides for a nice view with the green peaks of the lower hills poking through the white clouds. After going so far up we then had to go down the mountains. This meant an hour and a half of almost continual breaking, well it was more on and off the breaks jerking your way down while trying to stay in your seat. Made it to Guayaquil just after 4:30pm. Then got a taxi to the hotel.
after checking in went for a walk just quickly around the hotel and you can just feel everyone eyeing you off. It is kinda off putting. Was only out for an hour, just enough time to get some water and food before heading back to the hotel. Even at the hotel they are rude and not interesting in helping you with anything. There are also large security guards at the door. I understand now why a lot of people don't bother to stay in quayaquil, am just going to use it as a stop between buses and off to Peru tomorrow.
