2nd June 2013- enjoyed breakfast at the Casa and then got ready to leave Vinales. It is a long driving day today. We left at 9:30 and for a couple of hours before making a quick stop to stretch legs just outside Havana and then more driving for a couple hours to the bay of pigs. Driving on the east side of Havana you notice difference between the farmland. There are larger fields and crops, herds of animals. Will also admit that I didn't sleep a lot on the drive. The heat and humidity seems to make me feel very dopey and tired.
We arrived to the Bay of pig area and drive through swampy marshland before reaching the water. Stopped for lunch and swim. There was a large waterhole just meters inland form the beach. It was really deep but also salty. Was a fun chance to try out the underwater camera. There was some fish in the water. Had lunch of hamburger at the beachside shack as it was Sunday so there was no water going to the area so the restaurant couldn't open, neither could the washrooms. There were so many mosquitos and tiny crabs in the area. Swam in the ocean. It was beautiful clear warm blue water. There was a lot of different coral and fish again under the water. We swam for a short time but there was a strong current so didnt stay in too long. Then drive to the Museo giron in which we watched a short film about the American invasion at the bay of pigs in the 1960. The museum also had lots of photos and artifacts about the fighting that lasted for 3 days. After that it was back on the bus and a short drive along to Cienfuegos. We arrived and checked in our Casa for the night. This Casa is very modern and in a large house. Caught a tricycle taxi to the Palacios de Valle, this over the top marble and tiled home of a former sugar baron. We enjoyed a drink on the rooftop bar over looking the bay and port. Then back on the tricycles and along the malacon towards the Casa. Stopped for a dinner at a nice local restaurant where we had a private room at the back complete with fish tanks. There is very little outdoor dining in restaurants. Having to eat outside is seen a something that people with little money do, so restaurants nearly are always inside. This is different though when it is a tourists restaurants where eating fresh seafood outside is enjoyed, but not the local eating places. After an enormous dinner finished of with a Flan and chocolate ice cream.
