G'day Groovers,
After a very mountinous and sometimes nail-biting 5 hour bus ride, we have arrived in Vang Vieng. Before we got here, I was expecting a bit of a small Bangkok-kind-of-looking place with loads of bars, tubing (which I'd heard so much about) and nothing else. I was not expecting the absolutely stunning scenery both along our journey and around the town itself. It is breathtakingly beautiful!!
We decided that, after having a v lazy couple of days in Luang Prabang, we would blow the cobwebs out with a bit of adventure. So yesterday we hopped in a kayak and went on a one day kayak and caving tour down the Mekong.
For first-timers in river kayaking, we did alright. Stu and I shared a kayak and after being given the go-ahead once the tour guides tested our manouvering abilities, we proceeded to capsize in some rapids when we hit some reeds. Love a heart-pumping, adrenalin-fuelled, OMG moment!
I expertly secured myself under water, under the kayak, while holding onto the reeds for dear life. Once I managed to push the boat off me, it knocked poor Stu off his feet! woops! I was having a slight codenza until the guide helped me stand up - only then did I notice how shallow it was and how silly I'd been in getting worked up! The guides were briliiant though and helped us back into our kayak, and managed to find our water, as well as my paddle, downstream.
Apart from this little incident, we did really well at manouvering through the rapids and negotiating our way round. Go team!
Today, we have been chilling out at the Guesthouse as there has been no power in the whole town and as a result, no tubing was to be had - a bit gutting as we leave tomorrow for Vientiane, but it just means we have to come back here again :)
So the plan from here will be to catch a bus tomorrow to Vientiene (Laos Capital) From there we will catch a flight to Hanoi, Vietnam, and then make our way overland to Ho Chi Minh, taking in the activities along the way.
Will be sure to update you once we have hit a few spots in Vietnam. Until then, have fun!!
xoxo
