Hi everyone. Here's an update of what we have done so far. Sorry, but we cannot upload any photographs at the moment at this cafe. Arrived safely on 17/1 at Hotel South Pacific. Went out for a meal at 10pm as our flight was delayed by 1.1/2 hours.
18/1 up with the sparrows and went on an orientation tour visiting the boat people on a Sampan driven by Pop Eye's Chinese granny, then on to a jewellery factory which was a tourist trap, of course, then to Stanley Market and Victoria Peak, which was bloody freezing, returning backwards by cable car. Fascinating. In the afternoon we went to Kowloon on the Star ferry and watched the lazer light show on the buildings of Hong Kong Island. On the way back we stumbled across the local fish and meat market which was fascinating. The fish are still alive and they bash them on the head with a stick and fillet them there and then. You can't get much fresher than that!
19/1: Today we walked our socks off. Kowloon again and a taxi to the flower market, the bird garden (millions of little birds in cages), the goldfish market and the electronics area. This particular region is the most heavily populated in the world so we felt like sardines and were glad to get out of it. In the evening we visited the Temple St. night market and chatted to a couple of English teachers over a cheap beer in the street by the gutter. Ended up with a naughty midnight feast in the dormitory before crashing.
We have noticed that HK is incredibly clean with no grafitti and very little theft, which is surprising as there is no welfare state over here to help out the 3.1/2% unemployed. The people are extremely friendly and come up to you if they see you looking at a map to help out. We even had one chap escort us back to the hotel one night as we were lost! Wonderful.
It's a long way to come for a Chinese takeaway! We haven't tried the cooked chicken's feet yet.
We leave later today but plan to go on the old English style trams to the Botanical gardens. So that will do for now and will write again when we arrive in NZ. Hope everyone is well - incidentally although it's winter here we are walking about in T-shirts. Sorry to rub your noses in it!
