Noyelles Travels
Sunday 22nd June – Moscow
We were picked up at 10am & driven to the airport where we checked our flight & queued to checkin only to find it was for the wrong flight. An hour later we did manage to check in & wandered around looking for a short book on Moscow in English but without any luck. We spent our last Roubles on 2 coffees & then went to wait for our plane to Copenhagen. The flight was uneventful & we then moved on to the next one to Heathrow but the surprise was that SAS sells food & drink on its flights which seemed a bit cheeky really. In London we cleared Immigration & baggage 20 mins after landing.
A courtesy bus took us to the rental centre where we had to wait about 70 mins to do the rental paperwork. Eventually we left the depot & had an easy run down to Brockenhurst.
Monday 23rd June - Brockenhurst
Spent the day washing etc
Tuesday 24th June - Brockenhurst
Jenny went to London to a funeral and was due back around 7pm.
A visit to Lymington had a new battery for Jane's watch, a quote at the Jeweller for £15 then refused to do it when told it was a copy watch. The bootmaker nextdoor did it for £4.95. I noticed it wasn’t working a ½ hr later, then discovered the winder hadn’t been pushed in.
Called into see Rupert for a cup of tea, then Sophy and Birdie arrived with the cake. Interesting hearing all the family news.
Arrived back at 6pm to discover Jenny had been home a couple of hours earlier and couldn’t get into the house.
Wednesday 25th June - Seaford & Canterbury
Had lunch with Ann and Anthony on the coast.
Arrived in Canterbury around 5pm but had difficulty finding the address. After a few phone calls and driving west for a few kms when we should have been heading east, we finally made it. There was a great welcome from Virginia and a tour of the house with a choice of 2 rooms, what luxury. Michael arrived home and proceeded to cook us a wonderful meal. Lots of talking and eating before retiring to bed in the basement.
Thursday 26th June - Whitstable, Reculver Towers and Margate
A beautiful sunny day, set off around 10. d*** drove us to Whitstable where we wandered along the sea front, a beautiful pebble beach with a series of breakwaters, you could see across to Southend. Stopped at Reculver Towers, the ruins of a Saxon/Norman church in the corner of a Roman Fort, most of which has disappeared into the sea. On to Margate to the new Turner Gallery where we had lunch & then visited the Mondrian exhibition.
When we returned their daughter-in-law ,Esther & her 2 children came over & we were joined by Tom, their son, a consultant in Neuro problems specialising in Stroke treatment. They were keen to discuss their travels in Australia, where Esther’s brother lives.
Friday 27th June - Canterbury
Virginia & Michael took us on a tour of Canterbury Cathedral which was excellent. After lunching we set off to return to Brockenhurst but as we suffered long delays on the M25 & through Guildford we had to make straight for Milford to attend John Brace’s concert. John’s first words were "Had we heard about Sean?" He had a massive stroke on Tuesday at the doctor’s surgery & was taken to hospital. The concert was great as before, with the 'Red Fez Orchestra’ as the main act, playing 1920s & 1930s tunes with a wonderful singer. Somewhat to our surprise & delight Val was also at the show.
Saturday 28th June – Brockenhurst
To celebrate the 70th anniversary of D Day in WW2, the shops were decked out in wartime displays. We walked across the railway line to see some of the wartime sites of Brockenhurst & on up to St Nicholas’s church which had a fine display of the New Zealand Forces WW1, hospital which was nearby. There are some well tended NZ graves & a Memorial in the cemetery by the church.
Sunday 29th June - Brockenhurst
Jenny & Jane went to church to hear 2 Missionary doctors there who gave a talk on their work in Gahini while d*** replaced a light fitting in the bathroom & arrived later. The wife gave a talk on ‘Goalball’, a game for the blind she introduced & for which she was the Coach of the Rwandan National team, which played in the African Para Games. It was a great talk which everybody enjoyed. We were accompanied by 2 retired colleagues of Jenny in Rwanda who have a son working as an eye specialist in Alice Springs.
In the afternoon we drove over to New Milton to shop at Lidl & returned via Dick’s old haunts in the town.
