Saturday 23rd June
Today we anchored off Isafjordur & were tendered in to the port area. The town of about 2800 people sits in a fjord with some rather forbidding mesa like hills around it streaked with snow. It was 8°C & grey but luckily free of wind so we set out to explore the old town with its quaint houses mostly clad in colourbond sheeting, some almost like Subi houses of the 1900s.
It is a fishing port but there weren't many vessels in port. Tourism has replaced fishing as the main industry but there are several fish farms in the fjord.
After quite a reasonable recce of the town's finer sights we ducked into a bakery for a coffee before returning to a small visitor information centre which had very fast internet, much to our delight. We caught up with emails etc & Jane updated the blog while d*** returned to the ship for a late lunch.
The dinner was formal tonight & our table of 8 had 6 Aussies, so it was quite an unusual group.
Sunday 24th June
Arrived in Reykjavik, Iceland's capital on the south western coast. We took a shuttle from the cruise terminal into town & walked up & down the main street, finding the tall modern church on the hill top just before the Sunday service. As in Isafjordur, many of the older houses were clad in colourbond but the church was of concrete with an unfortunate stippled finish to the exterior. The town is very neat with many concrete blocks of apartments set parallel to each other. The roads were well laid out & kept & the overall impression was of order. The city holds about 250,000 of the 350,000 people of Iceland making it by far the most important city.
After a coffee & booking a bus tour for tomorrow, we caught a local No. 13 bus which took us on a winding route for about 2hrs before returning us to our first stop. As it was still quite cold & breezy we took the shuttle back to the ship.
