Rich & Alli's Travels
Well after a sweaty night in Beaver, we drove on to Bryce Canyon National Park. Before I forget, happy birthday yesterday dad!
Bryce Canyon National Park has some of the best scenery we've seen on the trip so far. The pictures probably don't do it justice, but it's like a forest of these rock formations call hoodoos. For all the budding geologists out there (of which we're not two), a large part of middle America was covered by an ocean millions of years ago, so after a few earthquakes and a bit of erosion you end up with Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Arches, Zion and probably a few more. There is some amazing scenery, and Bryce is amongst the best.
We did a reasonably strenuous hike down amongst the hoodoos, before running at fall speed back to the car as lightning and thunder were crashing down a couple of miles away, and we'd heard shortly before about someone been struck and killed.
As we were running out of time, and hence had to miss out on New Mexico and Billy the Kid's grave, we decided to squeeze in Zion National Park on the same day. Not far away, Zion NP had a good write up in the Lonely Planet, but we reckon someone must have given them a bung. The best features were by the entrance gate, which annoyingly we didn't get pictures of because we thought all the good stuff was coming. We went on a shuttle ride through the park, as they shut the road for the summer, got off at two disappointing stops and left. We did see some Elk on the way out the park though which was pretty cool, as we only briefly saw them in Yellowstone before and it was dusk so the pictures didn't come out.
As it was getting on a bit and the next stop was going to be LA (about 400 miles away), we decided to stop at Vegas again for a few cheap beers. Viva Las Vegas!
