After Mulu we took a flight to Kuching via Kota Kinabulu.
Our main reason for visiting Kuching, Sarawak, was to see another Orangutan sanctuary. There are few in the world, 2 of these are in Borneo so we thought we'd try our luck a second time.
The sanctuary was called Semongoh and was probably about an hour outside Kuching (which by the way Kuching is very hard to say without making a noise like a cash register, hope you are all doing it now!). We planned to get the bus to Semongoh but the tourist information gave us the wrong details so we ended up catching a cab with the oldest taxi driver in the world. He was sat really close to the wheel squinting and on his way out of the hotel carpark where we caught the cab he drove into his mates taxi, stacking the back. He didn't seem that worried though, he just tootled along.
When we arrived we had a short wait as feeding time was supposed to be at 10am. Like Sepilok, the Orangutans here have all been rescued and have been rehabilitated back into the wild. As we got a soaking last time we came prepared with rain gear ready to watch them whatever the weather. It did, as we predicted start raining heavily. Whilst in Borneo we think it only rained twice and both times were the days we chose to go and see the orangutans. As before they are very intelligent creatures so did not show at feeding time. We didn't blame them either it was chucking it down. One of the rangers, however did manage to spot one high up in the tree canopy. We all rushed in amongst the jungle trying to catch a glimpse. We did manage to see one but the Ape was very high in the trees so it was difficult to see in detail. We were still glad we went though as this was a more natural experience to Sepilok as we saw the orangutans swinging high in the tree canopies.
After Semongoh we did manage to get the bus back to Kuching. Buses are strange in Malaysia as they seem to stop everywhere and whenever they want. There usually is refuelling no matter how long the journey and this driver just pulled over to take a leak in the bushes, quite funny really!
Well this was our last experience in Borneo. It has been tough to get around as roads in some places were non-existent and Air Asia were pretty dreadful but it was definately worth it for our jungle river cruise and the orangutan sanctuary's.
Next stop the capital Kuala Lumpur where we hope we can get a nice hotel and pizza!
