What an amazing place – and huge! I take my hat off to the Wildlife & National Parks for creating such an area and providing toilets, picnic tables, open fire bbq and rubbish skips.
Here we are at Blowering Dam, which is fed from Talbingo Dam via Jounama Pondage – all part of the Snowy Scheme. We set up under the trees, the only van within cooee, looking across to the lake and the hills/mountains backdrop.
A mob of kangaroos, not 5 metres away, keep a wary eye on us as we go about our business. A couple of big bucks, with their harem, and many joeys. Tiny wrens on the ground peck at the dirt while others chase insects in flight, flitting, diving and darting all over the place until they claim their prey. They are so quick and very entertaining.
We drive over many of the tracks, down to the lake edge and encounter a mob (I picked this bad habit up from Bill. No matter the genus or species, if there is a group of anything, it is a mob) of emus. Fantastic seeing them in their grass skirts, well that is what they look like particularly when they move.
We see 2 other vans a long way apart on the edge of the lake and with us, that makes 3 over the many hectares of available ground.
We traverse more tracks and get some awesome views of the lake and surrounds from higher points and head back to camp..
When we get back, guess who is parked not 50 metres from us – you guessed it! The bone people. OMG.
As the sun drops, Bill goes fishing and I set my metal detector to work. This place is so clean, there are no tear tab tops, no rubbish lying around and few bottle tops! And no money, gold rings or anything else worth finding.
So it must be time for a gin and tonic, sitting with a mob of kangaroos 5 metres from me on the left, an awesome expanse of water in front of me and black cockatoos in the tree on my right. Heaven!
