As soon as we got off the bus we had caught from Arequipa (read previous entry) to Tacna, on the Peruvian side of the Peru-Chile border, a taxi driver offered to take us to Arica, Chile. We got there after it was dark, and needed a place to sleep for the night then get a bus the next morning. This caused some controversy, as Will claimed that we should either stay a further night in Arica, due to its status as a fairly interesting city that is used as a sea side resort by land-locked Bolivians and Chileans alike, or stop off somewhere on the way to Santiago, splitting up the 28 hour bus journey that we would otherwise need to take. Peter meanwhile, wanted to go straight through. Will pointed out that the next day was, in fact, Peter's birthday and that in his opinion, birthdays should not be spent in the tortuous hell that are 28-hour bus rides. Peter said that he didn't care about that and that getting to Santiago 2 days early would be a good thing. Will said that that was fine, if Peter hated himself that much like Dr House then that was his problem, and not Will's. So, after spending the night in a hotel next door to the bus station in Arica, our 2 travellers got on a 28 hour bus to Santiago teh next morning.
