Another day, another country.... this time it´s Uruguay! I´m currently in Montevideo, and much as I´ve been enjoying the countryside it feels nice to be back in a city again. We arrived in late yesterday afternoon, and the first thing we did was to have a decent, hot shower after 6 days camping! We then went out for dinner in a "proper" restaurant!
So far, the good things about Uruguay are:
1. Red wine - after some thorough market research last night I can confirm that Uruguain red wine is every bit as good as its Argentinian and Chiliean counterparts!
2. Steak - it was such a treat to go out last night and eat some real meat that hadn´t been salt-cured or cremated, and wasn´t accompanied by rice and beans!
3. Temperature - after being in 45 degree heat in Iguazu, 25-30 degrees here feels almost chilly! It´s nice to be able to where a shirt for more than ten minutes without feeling disgusting! It´s still lovely and sunny though.
We seem to have coordinated our visit to Montevideo with that of Mr Bush´s visit, which has both pros and cons.... On the down side, our restaurant last night was inside the area that had been sectioned off by the police, so we had to wait an hour for him and his entourage to finish their dinner before we could start ours. Given this rather desperate situation, we consoled ourselves with a beer in the nearest pub! I´m not sure if this is a pro or a con, but there are also loads of demonstrations in the city at the moment... let´s just say that Bush is probably not the most popular political figure here...!!!
However, for every bad point there is always something to be thankful for... the hotel we are staying in is also home to half the US Air Force who are here on "business" looking after GWB. There were some interesting conversations going on in the hotel bar last night after we got in from the night club....!!!!
Anyway, off now to see some of the city and make the most of the civilised world while we have it.... I´m off to Buenos Aires in a couple of days, but from there it´s off into deepest Patagonia!
Thanks again for keeping in touch and sending me your news... it´s really nice to come into a host of emails and message board postsd - especially after some of the long driving days we´ve done lately.
Look after yourselves, and speak soon.
Much love
