After an 17 (bonus when it's supposed to be 18!) hour bus journey of fun - Spanish bingo didn't really entertain me that much - we arrived in Salta. It's a massive town / city but really beautiful with flowers everywhere and lots of old but nice architecture. After finding some food we headed into the local museum where the Inca Mummies are found. These are 3 children that were discovered in 1999, they are perfectly preserved as they were trapped in dry ice - their hair, clothes, toys and everything are amazingly in perfect condition. All the colours and everything are still intact. Although very freaky to see a child from thousands of years ago staring back at you. That evening we made rice with chicken and a fruit salad - now although you may not think this is exciting it actually is as by now am completely and utterly sick of steak or pasta in restaurants!!
The following morning we headed off to a ranch to go riding in the mountains! They kitted Tom out in the most amazing trousers - oh he looked good - and we all got cool little riding anklet things. Lisa being the smallest of the group was interstingly stuck on the biggest horse and Tom having never even sat on a horse was given one the ranch owner described as having a strong personality - Tom definately discovered the extent of this when another horse rudely bit his on the bum causing it to buck and kick around for a bit - he managed to stay on though which is a bonus. Safety in South America has not been strong all the way through, but riding along with one hand (apparently how it's done here whether you like it or not) without a helmet didn't seem that safe, especially when the teacher then decided it was time we all tried out galloping cowboy style - still one hand!! Anyhow we survived and headed back to the ranch for an absolutely amazing barbeque lunch. The steak and pork just kept on coming - the ranch leader was actually offended when I stopped eating. It was a lovely day as it was his grandson's 1st birthday and the whole family were at the ranch - they just didn't seem to notice we were visitors and included us in the family party. After the endless free wine we managed to have we had a tipsy evening in the hostel trying to sort out the photos.
The next day in Salta after a lie in (yess we actually had one!) we headed off to the bus station to buy tickets for 5.30 tommorow morning - joy! Then came across a random free concert thing in the street and headed up the biggest hill ever for a spectacular view of Salta. Some crazy part of us that hasn't done much exercise recently decided that the way forward was trekking up over 1000 stairs rather than getting the cable car! We did get the cable car down though - dodgest cable car ever! The fact they had to give us a push start was not reassuring! Apparently I am developing vertigo! After that we headed to the park for pedalo fun -Tom had never been on one - how deprived is that!! There was a little island in the middle with nests on and we saw two eggs which was cool. Last fun of Slata was heading to a shopping meal for some last minute essentials before Bolivia!
