Niki's Travels
Hello! I'm going to apologise in advance as this journal entry is going to be very long. There is just too much to write! I'm sure it will probably be boring to everyone else, but I need to keep a record so I don't forget! I'm still in Cambodia at the moment in the capital city called Phnom Penh. Its chaotic to say the least. You have to put your bag between your legs when you ride on tuk tuks and clutch onto your money for dear life! I don't think much of this city so far. Its completely different to the other places we've visited (although i only arrived a few hours ago, so I shouldn't really judge). Everyone here just scowls : ( I have fallen in love with the rest of Cambodia though. Or what I really mean is the people of Cambodia. Everyone is sooo smiley and friendly! We have the most amazing tour guide called Sok. He's Cambodian and is soo cute! He lives in Siem Reap, and he took us back to his house. We met all of his family. They have a crocodile farm with 100 huge crocs in their back yard and 100 babies. We went to visit a landmine museum on our first full day in Siem Reap. I expected to walk around reading sad stories and looking at horrific photos (which we did), but it was actually a place where the landmine victims live! You walk around their huts looking at old bombs and reading about who each child is and how they came to live there. It was so sad! Lots of them had arms, legs or eyes missing and they had been neglected and disowned by their families who were too poor to look after them. Some of them were so young (about 4!) They live off the donations to the museum, so they are well looked after. Then we went to a floating village where all the fishermen live on a big lake. It was really interesting to see. Tiny children row around in buckets. It was quite disturbing though when they surrounded our boat and started begging. Its really difficult to know what to do because if you do give them money they fight over it. I usually just shut my eyes and run away so I dont have to look. There are so many beggers that I would be bankrupt if I gave them all money. The next day was Angkor Wat. Our tour guide thought it would be a good idea to watch sunrise, so I was up at 4:45 with my camera standing in front of the temple, but as its monsoon season it poured with rain. There was not even a glimpse of sun. I am NEVER getting up for sunrise again! What a waste of a lie in! The buildings were spectacular though! We even visited the temple where they filmed Tomb Raider and we rode elephants! Amb, I found something else to add to my magical wonderland of fosfloresence . . . . . . leaves in the grass that curl up and disappear when you touch them. They were everywhere! That night was the best so far. We were all drunk, so as usual I started to rant on about doing kareoke. To my amazement Sok took us! Yes, he really did. We went with 7 of us squeezed onto a tuk tuk to a building in the middle of nowhere. I was so scared. We were taken into a back room with a huge television and big sofas. We had two ladies - one to control the songs and one who constantly poured us beer. It was so bizarre! Sok even performed a Cambodian number for us! The next day we were up at 5:30 to move on to Kampong Cham for a bike ride on Koh Paen island where there are no cars. We had to take our bike's over on a motorised raft. As soon as we arrived children were running up to us shouting hello. I felt so famous. Everyone (children and adults) ran out of their houses to come and wave at us. They are so friendly. I did fear for my life at one point though, when a heard of charging buffalos came running at us (I jumped into a hedge). Animals were running all over the dirt tracks. I have never been so muddy in my life. As usual we got stuck in a monsoon so we decided to head back. The roads were really slippy though. I haven't ridden a bike since I was about 9, so I was a bit unsteady at times. Unfortunately, the one time that I did fall off was as I tried to high five two tiny naked boys. I was a centimetre from squashing them to death. They looked traumatised. I felt awful! All the way back people were pointing and laughing at us because we were so dirty. It was quite embarrassing. Yesterday we went to on a boat ride to see some fresh water dolphins. They only exist in four places in the world. We were taken there on motorbikes. I had the only only female driver and she taught me to speak Cambodian on the way. I cant believe how friendly everyone is here. Everywhere you go people run out of their houses waving and shouting hello. Its so nice! Its not like that where I am now though. Oh well - we're leaving to go to the beach tmrw. Woo hoo! I cant wait! This trip is so tiring! Keep your e - mails coming letting me know what you're all up to. I love hearing. I'm reallky sorry if I dont get chance to reply. I usually only have time to update my journal. I'm going to put some photos up now. It takes ages, so there may only be a few. Miss you all soooooo much! Love you loads xxxxxxxx
