After Barcelona we headed off to England for a few days. The sunshine and warmth in Barcelona was a stark comparison to the cold and blustery weather in England, but nevertheless we were in England. Whilst in England visiting my family we went to two really beautiful places (apart from Leeds that is); we went to York and Haworth. Most people know where York is but most people don’t know about Haworth. York is a beautiful city slightly north of Leeds. After catching the train we went to the Railway Museum which sounds really boring but is actually quite good fun and interesting. We headed out of the museum to the river from which we could see the city wall. We walked along the ancient walls of the city before heading into York Minster, the cathedral. York Minster is an incredible building, even if you aren’t religious. It has beautiful stain glass windows and amazing ceilings and even though they are still restoring the building it’s still worth a visit. After the Minster we went to a little pub for lunch and then headed to Betty’s Tea Rooms. Betty’s is a café where when you step in it it’s like stepping back in time. The waiters are all dressed as they would have been many many years ago; the way they serve the afternoon tea is just how it would have been in the 1800s. If you’re looking for an authentic experience of the way Yorkshire was for the middle class in the late 1800s, Betty’s Tea Room. Haworth is another gorgeous place in Yorkshire. It’s fairly close to Bradford. Haworth is a very small Yorkshire village in the Pennines where the Bronte sisters lived and wrote their incredible novels. The village in itself is worth a visit even if you don’t care about the heritage there as it is very quaint and has little shops conserved just the way they were in times gone by. We went to the Bronte museum which is actually they Bronte sisters’ old house. It was incredible to see everything preserved and to learn more about the incredible authors. After the museum you can see some stunning views of the Yorkshire countryside, all green and full of sheep. They’ve got an old sweet shop and an old apothecary where everything is still as it was in the 50s.
