On the way from Dunedin we stopped in oamaru, quite a small town but for new Zealand actually had a fair amount of historic buildings. Here we went to another penguin reserve, this time for the Blue Penguin, quite cool, they come out of the water roughly an hour after dusk, and this time thankfully we did see them! And lots of them, and they're so tiny, they only way around 1kg!! Very small! Was quite funny because these penguins are alot more social and less timid than other penguins, so they will go under anything to find a place to sleep, including underneath our cars, so everyone was told to check before they drove off... Unfortunately we didnt have one, much to our disappointment as we wanted to run off with one!!
On the way up from Oamaru to Timaru we stopped on the coast to see Moeraki Boulders, basically stone boulders on the shoreline of the sea... quite a random place for them to be, but quite funky! Walking to them was quite a chore however as the tide was in so trying to get there unwet was difficult but we did make it!
Timaru was another bigger town, think there is generally more civilisation on the east coast compared to the west coast... we think thats because it rains too much over there! we didnt do much here, just chilled really and went to the cinema. Was good to have a day to relax! Our next stop is Christchurch, our final stop before Australia and a final goodbye for our little camper that has been housing us for two weeks. It has been fun but we are definately glad to finally go and sleep in a proper bed and a room with insulation!!
