July 1, 2008.
I know it has been awhile and so much has happened since we last spoke. Well, we are in London and have been for three nights now and can I just say WOW. We came into London after a long ferry from Ireland, drive from Wales, car rental fiasco, tube, and finally, oh finally; our hotel.
45 minutes later, Peter Gilmore, husband of Anne Gilmore, my father's first cousin, whom he had never met picked us up and gave us a ride/ tour around the Northern side of London, to his charming flat. We had an absolutely wonderful time meeting their family and enjoyed our evening over delicious food and luckily for my Dad; a great Pilsner. They were so welcoming and while Anne and Peter are Americans, but have been living over here for 30 years; their 2 daughters--Eliza and Alexis speak in delightful accents. We had fun with the newest family member--Eliza's carrot-topped daughter--Ivy.
Day 2: Hop-on-hop off bus gave us an extensive look at the city--and what a city! First of all it is gorgeous, old, new, beautiful, fast, busy (and yeah for us it was warm) and it was totally massive.
We had planned to see Jude Law in Hamlet in the West End, but due to a grave planning error, we bought tickets for June 30, 2009. So we wandered the streets, dined and strolled some more down Regeant Street--the main stretch of shopping which had calmed down since earlier in the day. The first night of this trip, we got back to our hotel early, but stupid me, I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning watching Meercat Manor.
Today, Day 3 in London. Hop-on-hop-off bus for the fourth time around to take us the the hop-on-hop-off boat. The boat took us around the Thames where we got an entirely new perspective of the city. The boat took us to Greenwich where we as in me, enjoyed some vintage browsing and we all enjoyed a mid day fiesta with margaritas, coronas and tequila shooters (okay, not really the shooters). Our next stop on the boat was The Tower of London built around 1050 which has been a prison, palace, village and now houses the Crown Jewels. From here we lugged over Tower Bridge in search for food before our real theater plans---Midsummer Night's Dream at the Globe Theater in London. Talk about going out on top! We saw Shakespeare in London at the open air Globe! Needless to say is was magnificent--something I will never forger--and yes, I am a nerd. Tomorrow Nick and I head to Paris and parents head home. That's it for now. Stay tuned for an update.
