San Francisco was somewhere I had always wanted to go, in fact it was somewhere I had booked flights to a few times but something always came up and meant I never actually got there! This time even though Gareth got stuck in New Zealand waiting for his visa I headed to San Fran alone. Saying goodbye in Auckland airport was horrible - it was 12 months to the day since we'd left London for the 1st time on our big trip and a few weeks apart seems like a very long time when you've been living in each others pockets for so long.
My time in San Fran was brilliant mainly thanks to Louisa, Laura and Adam for showing me around, taking me out and letting me crash with them. Thanks!
In did some major sightseeing in foggy San Fran, through Union Square and past lots of crazy holiday shoppers (including some who had dressed by for the day to get their holiday snaps taken), down to the Ferry Building for some browsing (and buying), taking in the sights and sounds witha lovely dinner in Castro, taking in all the sights and sounds. One day Louisa and I headed down to Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 and had a lovely stroll around, admiring the very lazy and noisy sealions and then really focused on food - clam chowder in Boudin and of course chocolates and ice-cream at Ghiardelli, then we headed back along by the Yacht Club and drove over the Golden Gate Bridge to take a look at the city and the bridge from the other side of the Bay.
Alcatraz was amazing too - very eery and the audio tour really brings it to life. It was a slightly foggy day when I was there and the drop in temperature from San Fran to Alcatraz was amazing. I loved the area around by the Haights with lots of murals on the walls of buildings, brightly painted houses and stencils on the sidewalks. Plus Golden Gate Park was beautiful and the Museum of Science was excellent, particularly the aquarium and the planetarium, a definite must do!
A gorgeous city with a great vibe, I'm sure I'll be back.
