So i arrived in Mendoza, the wine capital of Argentina, not very well at all. We had made a reservation at a hostel, but we got there and really werent impressed so tried to find another one. We had been given a flyer at the bus station so headed there and at that point i really didnt care where we stayed as long as i got a bed. I spent the next two nights being very sick and feeling sorry for myself but managing to make it back to the bus station to book tickets to salta for a couple of nights time.
So on the second morning we were there I felt well enough to embark on the tour which is the main reason people come to Mendoza, the bike tour of the vineyards. Now it may seem a bit irresponsible to be in charge of a vehicle when tasting much wine but we thought about that later. We got on our bikes and headed out. We managed to make it to three vineyards, the first being quite a traditional one where we got to sample some good wines and had a tour and talk about wine tasting. After that we thought we were more experts and didnt bother with the tours again, just asking a little more about wine tasting in the second one. At the third one we decided to sit and watch the view from the terrace above the vineyards as we were enjoying ourselves too much to race to the next vineyard before they shut. It was a really nice chilled day and we wobbled back to the bike hire where we enjoyed some more wine before heading back to the city. Mendoza is really quite a big city, we had imagined more quaint a place like little french vineyard towns but that wasnt what we found. However in its credit it has some beautiful parks and the scenery outside is wonderful.
As we had only manage to go to three vineyards the day before we thought it would be rude not to go back and sample a few more before heading on our bus to salta that evening. We decided to go first to the olive factory where we got to sample some nice olives and somehow came away with 1kg of olives which we had to devour before heading back over to chile in the next week. We then enjoyed a bottle of wine across the road with the rest of the produce we had bought at the olive factory. We went back to the first vineyard of the day before to purchase a special bottle of wine which retails at over 150 us dollars for just about 15 pounds, bargain! Finally we headed to the chocolate factory sampling some interesting chocolate liquors before heading back into town for our bus to salta!
