Franz Josef Glacier
Heavy snow fall compacts the snow into ice and forms the glacier, which carves through the mountains. During the ice age it extended to the sea, about 20 km away. It moves all the time, around a meter a day, sometimes four. Tour companies carve out tracks daily, the impact on the glacier being little since this beast is in charge of us and not the other way around (at a micro level anyway, global warming is shrinking glaciers generally, but the climbing of people is not a problem).
