This has been one of our favourite experiences of the trip! Semengoh Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre was founded in 1975 to care for orangutans that have been confiscated or surrended. They are now proetected in Borneo and live 'semi-wild' in the protected area. There are 23 in the park - well actually 24 now as the pregnant female we saw on our first visit had given birth to a baby girl! The orangutans feed in the wild but unfortunately the park is too small to provide them with their entire diet. So, twice a day they come to a feeding area and the tourists are allowed in to watch! The whole place is set up to educate and promote the conservation of these amazing animals.
On our second visit, we were lucky enough to have a visit from the alpha male 'Richie' who was HUGE! He weighs in at 120Kg and is as strong as 6 men! After he had had his first feed, we lost count of the others, some with babies as they came up to the platform for their breakfast! It was a wonderful experience and one of the most special parts of the trip. Everyone should come to Borneo!
