Off to America, Sat 31st January
In typical style, I spent most of my last day in Britain loading music on my mp3 player and various other semi-important tasks. Finally started packing in the evening and didn't get to bed til 3am. A few hours later I was off - it's a wonder I didn't forget to pack anything!
Chances for a smooth check-in were very low after Virgin Atlantic failed at the simple job of sending an e-ticket to my inbox. I queued for over half-an-hour only to be told I needed proof of my flights. So I had to transfer to a different queue to finally get my hands on a paper itinierary. The only other drama was passing security where I had forgotten the 'liquids' in my first-aid kit and my box of waterproof matches puzzled the security staff for a while.
The flight was around five times longer than any I have taken before - it dragged... We flew over Greenland which isn't actually longer than 'straight over' if you remember we live on a sphere (roughly). In-flight entertainment helped a little - 'How to lose friends and alienate people' was watchable and 'Tropic Thunder' was still funny second-viewing as well.
