So on Tuesday 27th morning I had to say a sad farewell to Emily, Jac and Matt. Emily kindly drove me to the ferry point to take the Interislander ferry across from Wellington to Picton. Taking me from the north island of New Zealand to the South Island. It was sad to have to say goodbye as it was such a lovely 4/5 days with them, especially over Christmas and we knew it will be a while before we do see each other again. I also had that feeling on being solo again, which I know after a few days I will get used to again but after having such lovely company with friends for a few days its hard setting off alone again.
The interislander ferry took just under 3 hours to make the short trip across to the South Island. The journey across was stunning, luckily we had a really sunny and clear day so I was able to spend lots fo time up on deck taking in the views. You pass through the Malborough and Queen Charlotte Sounds which were beautiful. After docking up in Picton I walked to find my hostel, good location however the dorm had 28 beds (my biggest record yet, Bangkok forst night was 22). The room STANK of feet, yuk, but only 1 night here so doesnt matter too much. I had a nice quiet day in Picton. Picton, although is the gateway to the south island and sees hundereds of arrivals a day, is still a quiet and pleasant little seaside town. It was a lovely hot day so I just dandered around, bought some luch in the supermarket to eat by the water etc and generally had a lazy day walking around Picton. Met a lovely young french exchange student in thw hostel who was 15 and it was her first time away from home. So I spnet a few hours chatting with her, trying to remember my French!! Between us we managed to find all the codes etc for her to ring her mum back in france, for which she was very grateful for! Brave wee girl to come all the way to N.Z at that age, bless her, then the only person she could find to help her in french was me - gutted! Lots of umming and ehhhh...i cant remember that word! Funny though.
Tomorrow I set off on a 9.30am bus to Christchurch, I am a bit anxious about it to be honest as on 23rd Dec they were hit with another bad quake and there have been several smaller ones since. I did try to change my buses and skip christchurch but was unable to, so I have to go and stay for 1 night before moving on, Im sure it will be fine! Fingers crossed.
