Well after days of travelling I've finally hit ground in the Solomon Islands!!
Currently on the main island, Honiara and waiting a flight to Gizo which leaves in a couple of hours. The journey has been looooooong but I've met some interesting people along the way!
The Solomon Islanders are amazing. The 737 from Brisbane to Honiara only had 40 people on board, I was the only white girl on board, and so there were a few curious looks. (The Solomons only get 10,000 visitors a year!) With amazing luck I was sat next to a gentleman who spoke excellent English and introduced himself enthusiastically as Wilson. We spent the next 2 hours talking and he told me all about his amazing life story. He was the first native solomon islander that solomon airlines taught to fly the planes. I told him all about why I was going to the Solomons and he was very moved that I'd come all this way to help out at Gizo. He was very concerned when I told him my
plans to stay in the airport for 8 hours and said that it wasnt safe as we were arriving so early that nothing was open and appart from a couple of police man doing irregular patrols I'd be alone. With amazing luck it turned out that the manager of a near by hotel (who is one of his wantoks) was also on the plane so I have a room for wantok price (next to nothing).
So next leg of this journey starts this afternoon.
With any luck I'll be in Gizo by the time all you wake up!
Lots of love,
Natty xxx
