We made it, just!
Our 9am bus from Nong Khiaw wasn't full, so in Laos fashion it didn't leave and became the 11am bus. Eventually we were on our way complete with baskets of chickens and ducks strapped to the roof.... We got into Luang Prabang with 20 mins to race across town on the back of a tuk tuk and just made the 2pm bus to Vientiane.
One thing you have to give Laos is its bloody stunning. The journey was all through the mountains with amazing views (ignoring the locals continuously chundering into plastic bags - seems they don't travel too well). However 4 hours in the driver slipped the bus out of gear going up a hill and it decided not to start again... 2 1/2 hours(and 2 pot noodles) later we were back moving again. We eventually made it to Vientiane at 3 30am, an impressive 20 hours after we left.... And we travelled an impressive 180 miles...
After a couple hours kip we tried to work out what to do in this very random city, ending up scoffing burgers for lunch (naughty but oh so good) and going to the night market, which can only be described as a warm
Blackpool on speed. The market is massive and full of stalls with tannoys yelling about what they are selling. Which gets interesting when it's Colgate and Pepsi opposite each other competing for loudness...
We escaped and found an epic little roadside restaurant doing hot pots, for £6 we got a pot on coals full of broth and tons of veggies and meat to cook in it. Probably one of our best meals in Laos, and Tash must be getting better as the beer came out!
We spent the rest of the evening in the bowling alley, watching insane locals bowling in the oldest alley we've seen in a while!
Last day here today, off to vietnam tonight!
