Setting up in Cairns, and a day at the beach!
Cairns North, Queensland
Right, here we are, it's day 6 of my stay in Australia. And I've been a busy bee! At times anyway…
Arriving here on Wednesday the 29th of February, just getting out of the airplane was an immense experience, from air-conditioned airplanes into 33 degrees and burning sun! Wow.
Next thing to do was to get hold of the hostel, they've promised me a pick-up at the airport, and I walked over to what I can best describe as a huge advertisement board, found my hostel amongst 30'ish others, grabbed the receiver, and called them. And sure enough, 10 minutes later, this van turned up, which took me and a few others to the hostel.
Checking in was easier than I expected, as I had to do was to say my name, and wham! I had my very own room with a key! During the check-in I was told about this party being thrown by the hostel that very same evening, and in figured, yeah why not. So I went into my room to get out all my filthy travelling clothes, went for a shower. After the shower, I looked at my watch, 4 hours left till the party kicks off, plenty of time for a nap… Wrong… I slept all through the night. And woke up at 4am…
Oh well, having slept for about 12 hours, I decided to get up and get out for a walk to take look around the area, my hostel being located only 2 blocks of the Esplanade, Esplanade being one of the most awesome things ever. It's a kind of a multipurpose park/beach/shopping street, they're having free classes of a lot of different exercises, like spinning, yoga and swimming, plus 4 others. There's a different activity scheduled for each day of the week! All you have to do is, turn up!
Having cleared my head from the walk, I could begin to compile a to-do list of the day, opening a bank account, get a TFN (Tax File Number), and taking a look around the city, to get the "Lay of the land". I succeeded in every aspect of my mission. The past couple of days I've been waiting for my debit card to turn up, along with my TFN. As I Won't be able to start work before the TFN turns up. So it's kind of a big deal.
Then I had a couple of days doing more or less nothing, but checking out the newspapers for jobs and an apartment. There seems to be plenty of both around, just a matter of applying to the right people, in the right way. People I've been talking to appears to have absolute confidence in that I will be able to find a job, let's just hope the contractors will agree!
Sunday morning I jumped the opportunity to join a couple of other guys in their trip to palm cove beach, we were going fishing and swimming. Unfortunately not at the same time…
Had a great day though, the view was just unreal, even though I got some decent pictures, there's just no way of them being anywhere close to the real experience! Spending something like 7 hours at the beach, did however present another issue… The sun is a merciless companion; got proper sunburned on my ears, nose and feet… But I am managing.
Today, Tuesday the 6th of March, I will be spending most of my day compiling my resume, then going to have the quality of the resume checked by a job agency. In the afternoon I'm going to talk to a few agencies about an apartment, even has a possible flat mate lined up.
To everyone else, have a nice day!
