Before leaving Honduras, Cassie and I stopped off at the town of Copan in which the Copan Ruins are situated. After getting the ferry and two buses (where we did not have a seat but sat on upside down buckets in the aisle of a bus for 5 hours or so) we were relieved to arrive. The town was a cute little cobbled stoned street, market town. The central park was lovely with a cathedral and lots of little shops. That night we wandered round the streets, got some street food and chilled out in the hostel. The next morning I woke early and walked to the ruins just 1km out of town for my first Myan experience! I was the first one in the ruins (as I had to be back to catch my next bus to Guatemala) so it was very peaceful and managed to see all the temples alone! After soaking up the atmosphere and reading most the information I did the nature trail, well half of it as got totally freaked out by the huge spiders and the webs across the small path, and checked out the Scarlett Macaw reserve. The ruins were amazing, with lots of carvings still in place and with the town very well perserved it was easy to imagine life as a Mayan at the ruins. The most bizzare was actually seeing the ball courts where they played the original football matches in which the captain of the winning team was sacrificed to the gods! This was done on a stone ball with grooves for the blood to drain from their split throat! Grusome as it somes was interesting to see the orignal stone and court! After heading back into town, hitting the local market for lunch I met back up with Cassie and got ready for our next leg of the journey. Before leaving one of the guys in our room showed us his jewlery collection that he was making and selling. After seeing the feathers from the Scarlett Macaws from the ruins that he made in to earrings for £1 we couldn't resist! So with our souvenirs in hand the bus came and off we went! Goodbye Honduras, Hello Guatemala!
