Once we found where we were, we were able to find the hostel pretty easily. We dropped our bags off and headed straight out into Hong Kong. After two months of not being able to buy much, Laura and Sarah went a little bit mental buying new clothes and cosmetics. This obviously went down very well with the lads who got traipsed around all of the shops. Much to Toms delight though there are watch shops on every corner. How one city needs so many watch and cosmetic stores we will never know!
The first day was mainly spent replenishing our bags and eating lots of western food. Hong Kong is so far away from the China we are used to, it all seems too easy. Its not quite as British as we had imagined, but it definitely has the British price tags! The food is so expensive is comparison to what we are used to.
On our second day we got the Star Ferry over to Kowloon, it was lovely to see the city from the water. We spent the morning wandering around then got the bus up to Victoria Peak. The views from the top were amazing, it also has a pretty cool shopping mall. This always goes down well with the girls. While at the top we went up to the Sky Tower and watched the sun set over the city. That night we decided to treat ourselves to a meal at Pizza Express. This was Sarah's best meal of the trip, especially as the waitress dropped a knife on her foot and gave her a free glass of wine to say sorry! Brilliant.
Our next day we got up bright and early ready for our day at Disneyland! We had an easy tube ride over and we there ready for the opening on the days rides. We quickly decided it was our mission to go on every single ride in the park. With it being Halloween they had extra rides on. It was quite nice seeing Disney for Halloween, they really pulled out all the stops and it was such a fun day. We also succeeded in going on every ride! The park was open until 11pm with fireworks and a parade with a Halloween theme. It really was a brilliant day.
On our final day we got the bus over to Stanley. It is so different from the rest of Hong Kong here, we could have been back in Europe! We spend the afternoon on the beach, Sam even braved a swim in the shark infested waters. We then treated ourselves to another nice meal (steak!) as it was our last night and sat looking out to sea while we ate dinner.
Our time in Hong Kong was really lovely. It was a chance to catch up with the western world and have some home comforts. Its certainly a million miles away from what we're used to. We are now sat waiting to catch a train to Guilin having successfully negotiated another border control. This one was far easier with us just getting a tube to the border, then crossing by foot into Shenzhen.
Now China part two begins...
