We stayed in Phuket for 5 days. We arrived to ricos bungalows that were recommended by a friend. The bungalows were very special, a hidden gem behind the restaurants and shops of Kata. We were reunited with Craig and Ruth, some friends from Newcastle who we would travel with for the next 2 weeks.
The first day was a blur as we seemed to be suffering from jet lag so slept a lot. The following day we took to the beach to find our first dose of Thai food. The first thing we noticed was the amount of wild dogs there were. Being a mad dog lover it was hard to witness and extremely hard not to approach them, but I resisted after remembering the lecture I received off my mum before leaving.
Our first day trip was to James bond island which cost us 950 baht (£20). It started with a trip to the monkey cave, which much to our annoyance was a 2 hour drive from our hotel. There were monkeys everywhere when we arrived and not surprisingly Leigh was petrified. The cave was nothing spectacular but it was nice to be around so many monkeys.
From here we went to the pier where we got a long tailed boat to a floating Muslim village in the middle of the sea. It was very interesting to see how they have made it habitable with a school and shops.
The next stop was a short boat ride to James bond island. The island where 'man with the golden gun' was filmed. What a beautiful spot. Unfortunately I had only taken a few quick snaps before my camera broke. But that didn't matter we were surrounded by beauty and had taken the opportunity to explore the island. Our 30 minutes flew by and we were on to canoeing at the next stop. A young man paddled us around a cave whilst we sat back and took in the fact we were relaxing in paradise. All in all an amazing trip.
On our final night in Phuket we decided to go to patong, which I haven't heard good things about and I can understand why. But one thing it did supply amongst its scumminess is the opportunity to witness Thai boxing. We arrived there in our very first tuktuk ride which was so much fun. The Thai boxing was a very enjoyable evening and it wasn't too brutal but facinating to watch. I remember one man in particular who was significantly older than his competitor who seemed to be a substitute that they'd reeled in from the street, in other words he was nuts but very amusing.
The morning after the Thai boxing it was time to leave Phuket. We were sad to leave ricos but we were starting to out grow Phuket. So all set for the next leg of the trip now only one insane taxi driver stood in our way of boarding the ferry to Koh phi phi.
