We got to Siem Reap in cambordia via a 6hour bus journey from the not so nice city of Phnom Penh... the journey was fine apart from we were freezing from the air-con because the stupid thing above our heads had broken! The countryside again was lovely, just a shame they have a really bad litter problem.... piles high of rubbish now and again. We then got a tuk-tuk from the bus station to take us to a guesthouse we'd seen on the internet.... we nearly didn't make it there! Approaching some red traffic lights the driver tried to break........ we didn't stop.... skiding towards the back of a 4x4 pick-up.... the driver turned at the last second and we missed the pick-up by less than an inch!!! Thankfully after that little incident the driver drove abit slower.
That afternoon we went for a walk into the centre of Siem Reap, where we found the street 'Pub St'. Full of bars and restaurants. We thought it would be rude not to have a couple of cheap local beers... We then met a couple from New Zealand called Colin & Elle. They were very sound and we all got on well, they were in Siem Reap on holiday as Colins sister had got married there and they'd come to celebrate. They ended up paying for a couple of our drinks... and would not let us pay for any!! We tried to explain we are backpackers that are on a budget but we do have money. They invited us to join there family for tea later that night. We kindly abliged and went for a few drinks with them before going to a restaurant called red piano where we ate.... we got told to have whatever we liked because they were paying and we didn't have to worry about the prices!!! Ok then, Lucy went for her first steak since we'd been traveling! We drank a few cocktails called 'tomb raiders' in here because its the bar Angelina Jolie had requested a drink whilst she was out in Cambodia filming some of the film tomb raider. Every 10th 'tomb raider' purchased is free for whoever buys it.... Lucky lucky Lucy, hahaha, they brought it out to her with bells ringing and everything. Had to be there, but trust me it was hilarious. Colins dad was a butcher so we had something in common, and the english chap Colins sister had married was a comedian. We thought his jokes pushed the boundaries alittle too far sometimes should we say! They then finally allowed us to buy them a round of drinks at another bar. We then parted ways, as they went back to there hotel we went to another bar called 'angkor what'....
The following day we had a massive lazy day.... think we must have been a little bit rough perhaps!!! That night we just got a take-away n watched football in our room.
The day after we began what everyone comes to Siem Reap for.... Angkor Wat and lots of temples etc. We decided to get a tuk-tuk to take us around some of the temples in Angkor which included the main feature Angkor Wat. It was a scorching hot day, and we got plenty of pictures of various temple complexs. The tuk-tuk driver for 6 hours only cost us around £7, so we kindly bought him a cheeky coca-cola!
That evening we ate at a lovely italian restaurant on 'Pub St'. We ended up having one of those evening when you are just having such a good time you loose all track of time and stayed out quite late. We ended up in the bar 'Angkor what' again, Lucy discovered southern comfort for the first time in along time! A few hours later we came out of here with a new t-shirt for Peter and were a tad drunk..... As Neil and Kathleen discovered on skype later on!!!
We went to find a swimming pool the day after, the place was called Aqua. We set off walking as it was aparently only 1km away... around 20-30mins off walking in the hot sun we hadn't come across it yet. We thought the place must not exist anymore or we were in the wrong place! We nearly began to turn back.... but decided to carry on just abit more.... 30yards further down the round = hello Aqua :) . We spent all afternoon just lazing around the pool. We ate at some food stalls that evening which were very good value for money and delicious.
We hired some mountian bikes the next morning to go and explore more temples in the Angkor area. It was good fun and would recommend going to Angkor on bikes. We came across some monkeys at one point rooting through the bins for food (funny). That evening we had a cambodian bbq which was a nice change.
After quite a few days in Siem Reap it was time to leave and head back to Thailand where we had began our trip. On the bus journey we unfortuantely discovered that at some point we had had some money stolen from us. We think this occured in the city of Phnom Penh at Spring guesthouse.... we advise not to stay here!!
Anyways weve moved on now, and forgotten it ever happened. Hello Beautiful Thailand
